Is it OK for me to miss class?

  • All absences must be made up with similar content.  It is VERY important you do not miss class.  All absences must be approved by the specialist.  You cannot have more than two absences.

Will the Region 13 SCC find a job for me?

  • It is the intern’s responsibility to secure a school counseling position.

Can I get my intern or probationary certificate as soon as I am enrolled?

  • A certain portion of the class must be completed before you are eligible for your intern or probationary certification.

What if I taught for 3 years in a private school?

  • Your 3 years teaching experience must have been with a Valid Teaching Certificate and recognized by the state as a valid teaching experience

I have a vacation planned in June/July, can I miss a week of class?

  • That would put you over the number of allowed absences for the program.

Do principals really hire school counselors with alternative certification?

  • Yes

Do districts really hire school counselors on intern or probationary certificates?

  • Yes, individuals who hold an intern or probationary certificates are considered highly qualified.

How do I find out about open jobs?

  • Check district websites

Should I mail my transcript or bring it in?

  • Either is OK.  If you bring it in, it must be sealed.

Are all classes held at Region 13?

  • The plan is for all classes to be held here.

What skills are needed to be a School Counselor?

    Review the Necessary Personal Skills of a Counselor document.

  • Questions about the program, application and documents may be directed to Chrissie Harsh.

What if I have a concern about the program?

  • The Region 13 Educator Preparation Programs encourage stakeholders to discuss their concerns with appropriate program personnel who have the authority to address the concerns. Concerns should be expressed as soon as possible to allow early resolution at the lowest possible level. Informal resolution shall be encouraged.
